  • In this study, we investigated the antiviral potential of compounds isolated from marine organisms against equine herpesvirus type-1 (EHV-1). Compound fractions were isolated from algal and cyanobacteria species. To test for antiviral activity, equine dermal (ED) cells were incubated with the fractions and then assayed for infection with EHV-1. After screening 480 fractions we observed 19 fractions that inhibited EHV-1 infection. From these 19 fractions, we identified a compound that inhibits EHV-1 infection at low concentrations. Further assays were done to examine the effects of timing of addition of the compound, and to determine specificity of the compound. The timing assay showed that EHV-1 can be inhibited when the compound is added up to 120 minutes post infection. In the specificity assay none of the other similar compounds showed inhibition like the lead compound.
