A Pilot Study of Perceptions of Marijuana Among Community Living Older Adults in New Hanover County Grant uri icon

Abstract

  • The population of older adults is increasing in the United States, in North Carolina, and in New Hanover County. A review of the literature indicates that older adults are using marijuana at increasing rates. Given that older adults are already at increased risk of adverse effects from their prescription and over the counter medications along with physiologic effects of aging, adding marijuana to their drug regimen has the potential to significantly increase risks of harm. It is important that the healthcare providers be aware of older adults’ perceptions of marijuana, their intention to use it, and their awareness of potential harm. By identifying these factors, interventions can be developed to mitigate potential harm.
