Abstract
- This performance of identity narrative analysis maps the recurring roles research participants embody to enact performative agency in their open-ended narratives of experiencing uncontrolled seizures across social contexts and cultural relationships. Understanding the performative strategies cultural members who experience uncontrolled seizures enact enables cultural members who do not experience seizures to access the experience of seizing in daily life in our ableist society that deems bodies that seize unruly, unpredictable, and out-of-control. A performance lens applied to narratives of seizing illuminates the ongoing process of how humans co-constitute meaning, enabled and constrained by the cultural discourses through which we categorize and interpret identity.
