Adventures with AI in the school library Academic Article uri icon

Abstract

  • Although AI has been a buzzword in schools, districts, and school board meetings over the past 2 years, it failed to reach the top 5 in keyword searches on Google between 2022 and mid-2024 globally and in the US. A search in EBSCO indicates that only 156 articles with "artificial intelligence and K-12" in the title were published between Jan 2022 and May 2024. For comparison, a keyword search of "special education" yields more than 500 articles for the same time period in EBSCO. In 2023, the US Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology released "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning: Insights and Recommendations." This report notes that less than 15% of educators have an awareness of AI. This is striking considering the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) had 55 sessions on the topic at the 2023 conference, and there were more than 250 sessions on the topic at this year's conference.
