Structured content, a method of organizing information using consistent formatting, predefined elements, and clear hierarchies, has long been recognized as a vital tool for decreasing costs and increasing efficiency in business and technical communication (Ament, 2002; Hackos, 2002; Rockley & Kostur, 2003). Inaccuracy and bias are two of the biggest hurdles in widespread adoption of AI writing systems by businesses (Cardon et al., 2023; Getchell et al., 2022). structured content will play a crucial role in providing language models with clear and organized frameworks solving these challenges. This presentation will introduce structured content principles, explain their impact on AI writing systems, provide an overview of approaches, and demonstrate simple tools and techniques for students to start thinking about structuring knowledge bases for AI writing systems.
