Description

  • This study aims to explore the relationship between the guild system and the art of perfumery in the Ottoman Empire, revealing the historical, economic, and cultural roles of perfume guilds. Perfume guilds were an essential part of the Ottoman artisan organization, presenting the historical context of fragrance use in both palace culture and daily life.
The research can also be described as an artisan monograph, built upon the literature and documents related to the Ottoman guild system. It examines how the guild system evolved from Byzantine and Ahilik organizations and adapted to Ottoman social structures. The theoretical foundation is based on historical perspectives that assert guilds served not only economic functions but also social and cultural roles.
