Once home to the capital of the colony of North Carolina, southern Brunswick County changed dramatically as a result of the Civil War and Emancipation. UNCW Field school students excavated portions of four structures occupied at a former rice plantation during the transition from pre- to post-Emancipation. The ways that the structures were abandoned varied and reflect the different memories and meanings of the structures to contemporaneous Black community members. Those memories and meanings deemed worthy of transmission were preserved by members of the descendent Marsh Branch and Dark branch communities.
