Abstract
- Today we are witnessing a vast increase in the usage of mobile devices. With mobile devices, users can get access to different resources while on the move. Such accesses are managed by access policies that are implemented mainly based on the user role or other user's attributes. However, with the increase in users' mobility, we believe that the user's location needs to be furtherly utilized in the context of access policies. This is known as location-based access policies. On the other hand, Mobile devices can sense several types of signals over the air using different radio frequency technologies and can measure the received signal strength from these entities. We believe that these signals can be employed to enforce location-based access policy, particularly because they provide an indication of the location of a user's device. Thus, surrounding signals can be used in the verification of users' locations. In this research, we propose a scheme that implements Location-based access policies utilizing the current IEEE 802.11 infrastructure resulting in a secure and convenient location-based access policy enforcement. The proposed mechanism tries to exploit the current IEEE 802.11 infrastructure, making it directly applicable to a current ubiquitous system infrastructure.
