". This was the unveiling of a large sculpture by North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes commemorating a Civil War battle fought literally in front of where the museum now stands. Major research at the Cameron has gone into uncovering myriad details of that event. Along with the permanent outdoor sculpture, this was the opening of a temporary featured exhibition of Hayes' work indoors, a good part of which, including the title piece, is focused on slavery and its legacy. The all-day event also featured dramatizations, story-telling, a question-and-answer session with the artist, and children's activities. Hundreds of people attended.
