Abstract
Background/Objectives Chiropractic care (CC) plays a significant role in occupational medicine, particularly when it comes to managing workplace injuries. With its focus on the musculoskeletal system and nervous system, CC offers a non-invasive and holistic approach to treating and preventing injuries commonly associated with the workplace. Several states allow injured workers to choose a chiropractor for medical treatment and others allow injured workers to designate a chiropractor as their primary care provider within the workers’ compensation system. This study aims to provide an observational analysis of patterns and trends of CC use in occupational medicine. Methods 2018-2022 medical bill data on closed claims with dates of injury during the analysis period was used. We restricted the sample to a specific set of musculoskeletal conditions to draw a more meaningful comparison between those who use CC and those who do not. The data set represented a variety of employer types, occupations, patient demographics, and jurisdictions. Results The study examines CC on what’s the outcome? injured workers as well as the trend of CC costs across time. Patient profiles of CC use and state variation of treatment use were also examined. About 2.4% of claims involved CC and these workers are more likely to be older and living in urban areas. Conclusions In occupational medicine, chiropractors collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for injured workers. This integration allows for a more holistic and effective approach to treating workplace injuries, leading to improved outcomes and faster recovery times for employees.
