Title of Activity: Moving from Here to There using an Academic Nurse Residency
Description/Purpose: A shortage of nurse faculty, or academic nurse educators (ANE), limits enrollments in nursing education programs and the number of nurses entering the workforce (AACN, 2022). Increasing the number of ANEs requires a strategic approach that includes introducing nursing students to career paths in education (VanRiel et al., 2023), graduate education programs that prepare nurses for the role (Gazza, 2018), and transition programs that support nurses who choose careers in nursing education (Gazza & Mehrlich, 2019). The purpose of the session is to explore a transition program that can support nurses moving from here (clinical practice) to there (educator practice). Nurse residency programs effectively support graduate nurses as they begin their new positions in practice. An Academic Nurse Residency (ANR), based on the Nurse Educator Transition Model (Schoening, 2013), can support nurses transitioning to specialty practice as an ANE in nursing education. During this interactive session, we will explore the experiences of clinical experts who recently transitioned to educator positions; discuss components, outcomes, and implications of an evidence-based ANR; and generate an action plan for building the cadre of ANEs who will prepare the next generation of entry-level and advanced practice nurses. The session is appropriate for individuals interested in the ANE role, nurses curious about support strategies for new faculty, current ANEs who mentor new colleagues, and administrators wishing to build faculty development programs to support faculty.
