Design is acknowledged as one of the more difficult activity in software engineering and academic institutions have been encouraged to put software design at the center of their computer science curricula. Systematic software design methods are needed to support the successful teaching of software design in academic settings and to enhance the maturity of software engineering as an engineering discipline. This paper presents a systematic structural software design algorithm and illustrates the algorithm through a case study in software design. Case study details, results and lessons learned are presented.
