Using Squeak to Infuse Information Technology (USeIT) Presentation uri icon

Description

  • The USeIT project is a collaboration between the school of education, computer science department, and middle and high schools in three counties. The project utilizes the Squeak Etoys media authoring tool as a modeling environment to infuse IT skills into the core STEM curriculum. The targeted audience for this project is practicing STEM teachers and their students in grades 7-12. USeIT exposes students to science, mathematics, and engineering concepts by integrating the use of Squeak Etoys and their modeling capabilities and PBL. As an open-source simulation and modeling tool, Squeak is both a full-featured, pure object-oriented programming language and a programming environment that allows novice users to easily model media-rich worlds. The teachers participating in the project assist the project team in recruiting students for summer workshops, and also disseminate skills acquired in the context of this project to other teachers and students in their schools.
