Using an Open-Source Modeling and Simulation Tool to Transform Learning and Instruction Presentation uri icon

Description

  • This hands-on workshop will help participants learn about an open-source simulation and modeling tool -–Squeak Etoys--and its application for transforming learning and instruction. Participants will engage in using Squeak Etoys to construct dynamic simulations of a topic or concept of their choice. They will also learn about an NSF-funded project in which Squeak Etoys has been used within an immersive, problem-based learning environment to transform STEM learning and instruction in middle and high schools. Finally, in an open-discussion forum, the participants will generate ideas for how and in what ways Squeak Etoys can be used to empower learners and to improve thinking skills. No prior knowledge is needed. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops and think about an idea or concept that they might like to use as a basis to develop a simulation or model.
