Description
da Vinci’s stage designs for Taccone’s production of La Comedia di Danaë (1496) found on the verso of Inventory 17.142.2 (Metropolitan Museum of Art) provide singular insight into the role of theater at the court of Milan. I show that Leonardo’s lift not only miraculously transformed Danaë into a constellation, compelling all to “marvel at the new star, kneel down and worship it,” but also made him a star.
