gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the value and possibilities for learning social foundations of education course content when applied to service learning activities that are offered early in a pre-service teacher’s preparation. Since concepts and content covered in the foundation courses and applied in field-experiences can be directly tied to methods course content, our objectives are two-fold, first we hope to inspire ideas for innovative collaboration between methods course faculty and foundation course faculty to provide a beneficial layered approach to teacher preparation. Second, we seek to highlight specific approaches to nurturing opportunities for building cultural competency and for engaging pre-service teachers in critical dialogues and reflection on the social, economic and political complexities of schools, students, and communities.
