Abstract
- Seven pottery sherds were submitted for absorbed pottery residue analysis from 31CD968, all of which contained interpretable residue. Four of the samples derived from a mixture of plant and animal resources. One of these mixed residues also contained a biomarker for conifer resin. Two of the samples were derived primarily from plant and/or fish resources. One derived primarily from non-fish animal resources, with a small amount of conifer resin. Six of the seven samples contained at least two of a variety of unusual fatty acids: 2-methoxy fatty acids, a variety of different hydroxy fatty acid configurations, and dicarboxylic fatty acids. Interpretation of these compounds is difficult. They may derive from plant roots or tubers, from bacterial lipids, or from plant sphingolipids.
