Abstract
Nine pottery sherds were submitted for absorbed pottery residue analysis from 31CD967, all of which contained interpretable residue. One, RL530, contained two markers for fish/shellfish, indicating the possibility that fish or shellfish may have been processed in the vessel. Two samples, RL 526 and 529 appeared to derive primarily from plant and/or fish resources, but there were no sterol biomarkers present. Two samples, RL 527 and 531 had sterol biomarkers for both plant and animal resources, and the fatty acids appeared to be primarily plant and/or fish although meat or fish was present. The four remaining samples, RL 524, 525, 528, and 532, contained sterol biomarkers for meat or fish, and often, though not universally, for plant resources, and the fatty acids indicated a likely mixture of animal and plant resources. In addition, eight of the nine samples contained unusual fatty acids, either hydroxy-acids or methoxy-acids. These compounds may reflect an origin from plant roots or tubers, from bacterial lipids, or from plant sphingolipids.
