“Electronic Resources for Education: A Collaborative Approach”. North Carolina standards for all subjects and at all levels include the imperative for students to interact with library materials, whether in the form of primary sources, instructional kits, books, or periodicals. Most school libraries however do not focus on collecting or providing access to electronic periodicals or primary sources through databases. Many teachers and school librarians remain unaware of the wealth of free materials available digitally. Librarians at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Randall Library have over the past year undertaken concerted outreach with teachers and school librarians to raise awareness of primary sources available through Randall Library digital collections, NC Live databases, and other websites such as DigitalNC and the Library of Congress. Education liaison librarian Melissa Raymer and Associate Director for Library Specialized Collections Nathan Saunders will discuss several ways they have reached out to teachers. First, Melissa will describe the wide variety of materials available to North Carolina teachers and students through NC Live databases. Nathan will then describe the LSTA funded initiative to digitize materials related to local civil rights history housed in Randall Library Special Collections. Nathan will also discuss initial meetings with individual teachers about primary source access through various databases. Finally, Melissa will describe her work with University of North Carolina Wilmington lab school at D.C. Virgo, focusing on local history education initiatives as well as grant opportunities.
