Epidemiology of Roller Derby Injuries Among Female Roller Derby Athletes Presentation uri icon

Description

  • The purposes of the study were to describe the type and frequency of injuries among female roller derby skaters and describe intrapersonal factors related to injuries. Data were collected from March to June 2015 from individual league members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) through an electronic questionnaire. Of the 1,453 respondents, 53% reported having at least one derby-related injury that required medical attention in the last 12 months. The most common injuries were to the knees and head. Of the head injuries, 82% were diagnosed with a concussion. Most of the injuries occurred during practices and resulted in the skater missing more than three weeks of skating. The findings could be used to develop derby specific off-skates injury prevention training programs.
