In our increasingly global economy, students with broad perspectives and deep understanding of cultural and political differences are likely to be more employable and better prepared to be responsible citizens. Furthermore, as the world’s population ages and more people are living longer, though not necessarily healthier, lives, it is also important that the future care providers, health care workers, and tax payers are aware of the variety of ways that people experience aging and that different cultures address issues associated with aging. To those ends, this course facilitated students’ study of and exposure to common institutional practices for working with older adults in the United States as well as parallel practices employed in Finland, where aging in place is more highly supported, including through public policies.
