Background: Pharmacogenetics provides a way to tailor drug therapy. This revolution has resulted in a knowledge deficit for many healthcare providers on the use of pharmacogenetics. Providers are at the forefront of patient care, making them well positioned to educate patients about innovative technologies associated with their health. Therefore, healthcare providers play a critical role in the incorporation of pharmacogenetic testing and genotype-guided therapy. Based on this information, the conceptualization of a pharmacogenomics course within an on-line DNP program was manifested. Methods: The development of the course began with input from a nurse expert in the field of pharmacogenetic testing. This information led to active-learning strategies within the on-line environment such as the case study utilizing the Harvard Personal Genome Project Database. Once the course description and learning objectives were completed, the course syllabus was brought to the DNP Faculty Committee for approval. Results: Despite the overwhelming majority for the addition of this course into the program, only a limited amount of credit hours could be utilized for this course. Therefore, this course was condensed from a 3-credit course to a 1-credit course. Recommendations: One effective strategy for the development of this type of course requires feedback from an expert in pharmacogenetics. Furthermore, development of this course would ideally be more effective during the initial implementation of a DNP program. Finally, collaboration with Computer Science to develop virtual simulation activities surrounding the integration of pharmacogenetic testing into practice would be helpful in the education and comfort levels of DNP students.
