Abstract
- Visible residues were sampled from two pottery samples from the Vine Valley site, and five pottery samples from the Pointe-du-Buisson site. The samples were collected as a preliminary project exploring variation in Northeastern archaeological sites, in order to help determine if useful information could be derived from such residues. Interpretable results, including sterol biomarkers, were extracted from all seven samples. Pine resin was present in 6 of the 7 samples, and non-pine plant resin was definitely present in 2 of the residues, and tentatively present in 1 of them. Three of the visible residues contained thermally produced alkylphenyl alkanoic fatty acids, indicating that polyunsaturated fatty acids were heated above 300.
