Description
Depression is a leading cause of disability in women. Perinatal depression includes both major and minor depressive episodes is estimated to impact between 12-20% of pregnant and postpartum women. The consequences of maternal depression can range from preterm delivery, negative maternal-infant bonding, child behavioral problems and in severe cases suicide and infanticide. Perinatal depression is underdiagnosed and can often go unrecognized as women may not report their symptoms. Screening for depression with a validated tool increases the rate of detection of depression. Identification of at-risk women and early treatment intervention improves outcomes for women and their families.
