An Innovative Applied Learning Enhancement for Online Nursing Program Orientations: Building a Foundation for Successful Application of Information Literacy Grant uri icon

Abstract

  • This project aims to improve Information Literacy (IL) skills by providing students enrolled in the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing Nurse Educator (MSN-NE) online accelerated programs (OAP) with an interactive IL Tutorial Module. Core competencies for RN-BSN and MSN NE programs require nurses to access and utilize current evidence in their role as bedside nurses or nurse educators (QSEN, 2019; NLN, 2019). A needs assessment administered to both faculty and students in the RN-BSN and MSN NE programs at UNCW indicated that students struggle with identifying, analyzing, and synthesizing reliable sources that offer evidenced-based information. To address these challenges, nursing faculty, librarians, and an instructional designer are taking an interdisciplinary approach to develop a high quality and engaging online tutorial module that will improve IL skills of our target population.
