Equifax breach as cybersecurity case study Presentation uri icon

Description

  • On September 7, 2017, Equifax announced it had suffered a cybersecurity incident potentially impacting 143+ million U.S. consumers. In the immediate aftermath of the breach announcement, the CEO, CIO, & CSO retired and a SVP was fired; consumers were worried & confused; tech journalists were critical; and politicians indignant. Now (18 months later) there is a great deal more information related to Equifax activities before and after the breach available via a GAO report released in September 2018 and congressional report released in December 2018. These details allow for a detailed examination and analysis of Equifax’s cybersecurity policy, processes, personnel management, tools, etc. which makes it extremely useful as a case study.
