Effect of the Active4Me Application on Transportation Mode to School among Elementary Aged Students Presentation uri icon

Description

  • The purpose of this intervention was to increase the number of children utilizing an active mode of transportation to school. An AB research design was used. Baseline data were collected via parent consent forms. Intervention data were collected once weekly for 31 weeks. A teacher scanned barcodes placed on students’ backpacks using the Active4me app, upon arrival at school. Instantly, students received positive reinforcement from the application, including active trips completed, miles covered, CO2 saved and calories expended. Simultaneously, parents received a notification from the application that their child arrived to school safely. Students could also earn tangible incentives. The mean number of students using an active mode increased from 25 to 48 over the last ten weeks of the intervention.
