Abstract
Mobile technology is emerging as a promising educational platform for chronic disease management. Patients with heart failure (HF) have high rates of hospitalization, readmissions, and complications. Patient education and self-management skills are critical for controlling this condition. The goal of this cross-sectional, descriptive quantitative study was to determine if older adults were utilizing or willing to utilize technology for education and self-management of their HF condition. This study was conducted with a convenience sample of 37 adult HF patients in an outpatient cardiology clinic in the Southeastern U.S. by completing a 23-question survey containing demographic and multiple-choice questions related to personal use of technology and acceptance in using technology for education and self-management of HF. Descriptive statistics revealed that over 45% of participants (age 60-69) and 23% of participants (age 70-79) were using text messaging and Facebook. Attitudes regarding technology were positive with, 78% believing technology has a positive effect on health care and technology can help them better self-manage their HF; 84% believe technology can help educate them about their heart disease; 70% believe technology can help educate them about their heart disease and 86% believe training will allow them to use technology better. The findings of this study may be used to develop or modify a HF education program for patients.
