Despite use in other health professions, little research exists on the implementation of simulation-based training in the field of clinical research. This pilot study aims to determine the feasibility of using simulation-based techniques to teach basic concepts of clinical research. During the summer of 2017, 10 students from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) participated in simulations on obtaining informed consent. Reflections and pre- and post-tests were analyzed. Results indicated that all participants had a better understanding of informed consent post-simulation. Participants also rated the difficulty of performing the simulation as “Easy” to “Moderate”, and there was a significant change in pre- to post-test scores between 0.07 and 1.33 points (p-value=0.033, α = 0.05). Findings suggest that the implementation of simulation-based training in clinical research is feasible, but further research is necessary to evaluate the versatility and effectiveness of simulation-based teaching as compared to standard instructional techniques.
