Description
PURPOSE: Evaluate the Easy Breather Exercise Table (EBET) in terms of feasibility for clinical trials in diseased populations. METHODS: The EBET uses arm power to rock the supine subject from a Trendelenburg to a reverse-Trendelenburg position with the goal of assisting breathing. Healthy volunteers (n=40) operated the device for 15 minutes. Measures of interest: A body part discomfort scale, a BORG scale rating of perceived exertion, and an end-of-session safety rating. FINDINGS: Areas with the greatest discomfort during the 13th minute of use: left elbow, right elbow, left wrist, right wrist, left hand, and right hand. Exertion levels were higher than intended by the inventors of the device. Most participants indicated they felt safe on the device. CONCLUSIONS: Device modification is warranted prior to further investigation.
