Statistics show that more males than females pursue computer science as a field of study. Studies show that females lose interest in computing at a higher rate than males throughout the academic process. One suggestion for this difference is that males use computers more often than females as adolescents and use them for different reasons. Since males have used the computers more often, the reasoning goes, they are more familiar with their applications and may be more inclined to continue using them in an academic/work setting. This presentation looks at a longitudinal study that compared males and females who had enrolled in a computer concepts course and had taken application skill tests to see if, with general computer applications (productivity software), there is a difference in the skill levels between the two groups.
