Abstract
- Against an “exclusively sociology-focused interpretation” of May 68 (Ross), this article strives to demonstrate that the essence of May 68 was in fact political, with enduring consequences to this day for both internal French politics and French literary practices. I show in particular how Alsatian regional literary figures such as André Weckmann, very active during May 1968, firmly opposed the Gaullist “C’est chic de parler français” tenet and produced well into the twenty-first century a very distinctive type of French literature rehabilitating regional accents over linguistic normality –a literary revolution much in line with Jacques Rancière’s political philosophy of “equality” and still alive locally through the ongoing protests against the 2015 “réforme territoriale.”
