Description
This is a discussion of 2002 film City of God, an international blockbuster which was very polemic in Brazil. My article discusses sensitive issues in Brazilian culture touched by the film: The connection between poverty and violence; crime as a solution for social injustice; the representation/fetishization of 'the other' by a middle class director whose portrait of the poor was identified by critics as an advertisement aesthetic.
