An interactive symposium organized around two studies that examine the notion of “white allyism” in education. The first paper addresses the lives and work of two white higher education faculty members (a straight untenured woman and gay tenured male) whose allyism is embodied in their efforts to create justice and diversity initiatives at a historically white college with a growing minority student body. The second paper illuminates the perspectives of five African American educators who were asked to reflect on the notion of white allies, discuss their relations with white allies at their respective work sites, and to address the role of white colleagues in antiracist activism in schools. Collectively, the papers, and the critical dialogue the authors intend to develop with the audience, expand the discourse on race and education by offering unique perspectives, from both sides of “the color line,” on the place, the purpose, the problems and the possibilities of white antiracist activism.
