Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of a relatively new technology tool for teaching students how to apply the theories and/or principles of interpersonal communication. Specifically, the advantages and disadvantages of using email conversations to help students understand interpersonal communication theories and/or principles are discussed. The discussion begins with a justification for and description of a research paper assignment in which students are asked to collect and analyze data from self generated email conversations. A sample text is included along with a detailed description of how to apply theory to it. The discussion concludes with an exploration of the ethical and methodological limitations of using this technology in this way by addressing issues such as invasions of privacy and the idiosyncratic application of interpersonal communication theories and principles.
