- Contingency management is a scientifically based process of providing incentives for abstaining from drug abuse. Techniques involved in this treatment include positive reinforcement for drug abstinence and punishment for returning to drug use, with the emphasis on positive reinforcement. Motivating Behavior Change Among Illicit Drug Abusers reviews literature describing the use of contingency management techniques with a wide range of individuals, including pregnant women, homeless people, and schizophrenic drug abusers.
