Background/Rationale for the study or project: Facebook use in online courses may increase student interaction and grades. There is limited literature about the use of social media in online nursing courses and a need for guidance in implementing social media in online nursing education.
Purpose: The purpose is to explore lessons learned from using Facebook in an online RN to BS course.
Method(s)/Evidence: Researchers reflected on implementing Facebook in an online course and collected information from faculty and student challenges to discuss lessons learned.
Results: Lessons learned included how to implement Facebook in a course, student and faculty challenges with technology, and the best use of social media in an online RN to BS course.
Conclusions: It is important to have information technology support, clear guidelines for students and faculty, and an understanding of social media when implementing social media in an online RN to BS course.
Implications for Nursing Education: Facebook and other social media applications have potential in nursing education, but facilitators of courses using social media need to understand how to implement social media applications for students, the challenges of technology, and how best to use these applications to achieve learning outcomes.
