Nuts to Us! Detecting Nut Processing through Absorbed Residue Analysis
Presentation

Description
Detection of nut processing in pottery vessels through absorbed pottery residue analysis would be useful for southeastern archaeologists due to the importance of the nut crop in many southeastern societies across a broad time range. Because of the relatively common fatty acids present in nut oils, this identification has not been possible to this point. Further analysis suggests, however, that in some cases nut processing can be detected by means of identifying traces of triterpenoids present in absorbed pottery residues.
