Abstract
- Thirty-seven pottery sherds from three sites in North Carolina were submitted for absorbed residue analysis. Residue preservation was remarkable and all sherds yielded interpretable results. Thirty-five of the sherds from the site contained primarily plant or fish-based residues. Some form of marine resources may have been present in 30 of the samples. Pine resin was found in two residues, while non-pine plant resin was found in many of the residues. Residues from the three sites did not seem to cluster into separate groups, and it seems likely that people at all three sites processed a primarily plant and marine-resource-based diet in the vessels submitted for analysis.
