The clinical research industry is expected to increasingly grow providing employment opportunities for individuals interested in study design to operations. Universities are seeking to address the potential demand well-prepared professionals by offering degree programs from undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. How well students understand and view the clinical research industry they are planning to enter is unclear. A literature review for this study found most assessments were limited to students in health fields like nursing and medicine. Many health field graduates focus on patient care rather than research. NIH has sought to address the lack of participation in clinical research as a translational science by these health fields. However, there is a component of clinical research involving the operational professionals that is coming less from these health fields that also requires further evaluation. Clinical research operational roles include trial and project assistants, study monitors, site coordinators, or data management. Individuals filling these operational roles are hypothesized to have better outcomes in their academic and professional development if they are more informed about their targeted study and career fields.
