Abstract
This project is designed to help students in various health professions become more knowledgeable about and skilled in supporting cancer survivors and their families.
This project Is a follow-up to the April event, “Fighting Pediatric Cancer Together: The Necessity of an Interprofessional Approach to Advocacy, Quality Healthcare Service Provision, and Funding Research” during which student attendees directly asked for more interpersonal training on working with families facing pediatric cancer.
The summer fellowship will help faculty design an innovative, interprofessional educational opportunity for students that will result in an ETEAL grant submission in fall and implementation of the project in spring, 2016 in three courses. The general idea is to utilize the simulation lab not only to allow students to practice engagement skills with clients/patients and their families but to create training videos useful to various disciplines. These would be used in classes and potentially in a larger follow-up event offered to students and possibly professionals in the community in much the same fashion as the April event mentioned above.
Benefits of this interprofessional educational opportunity include:
• Collaboration between faculty and students across three disciplines in CHHS (social work, nursing, and exercise science)
• Promotion of interprofessional teamwork in cancer-related healthcare services, although the skills learned will be useful with other populations as well
• Increased attention to students gaining a greater understanding of the specific roles, perspectives, and skills of professionals in various healthcare fields.
• Increased attention to students developing specific skills to ensure quality healthcare service provision with this population
