Abstract
In the controversies over the introduction of danse du ventre into North America in the late1880's, primitive religion was often adduced as a mitigating factor in the dance's perceived obscenity. Popularized (mis)readings of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams and Frazer's The Golden Bough added to the discourse. Individual readings show the range of ethical and aesthetic appreciations.
