Description
Faculty Development for Incorporating Presimulation Learning and Prebriefing using a Sim-IPE exemplar. Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, learners will be able to Discuss the background and significance for using the Prebriefing: Preparation and Briefing Health Care Simulation Standard of Best Practice for Interprofessional Education Simulations.Analyze the use of the Prebriefing SOBP using a Sim-IPE exemplar to enhance learning.Apply strategies to incorporate Prebriefing SOBP elements and criteria into Sim-IPE Introduction: Despite advances in simulation science, confusion exists regarding prebriefing, an essential component of simulation experience that fosters learner outcomes and psychological safety. The Health Care Simulation Standard of Best PracticeTM for Prebriefing was recently published, and faculty need to incorporate this standard into educational offerings. The project’s purpose is to examine the use of the Prebriefing standard in a Sim-IPE to enhance simulation faculty’s knowledge. This project can serve as a model to educate faculty to structure an effective prebrief. Project: An Athletic Training and Prelicensure nursing student Sim-IPE was used as the exemplar for this faculty development project. Prior to the Sim-IPE, relevant reading materials were shared with students and a Prebrief Checklist was developed. The prebrief included student introductions and students’ descriptions of their discipline’s roles, skills, and professional identities. The prebrief also reviewed learning objectives, ground rules, student roles, environment, and equipment. We met with the interprofessional faculty and discussed the pre-learning and prebrief information. The setting for the Sim IPE was a School of Nursing Simulation Lab, learners included 20 Athletic Training students, 10 Prelicensure nursing students, and 4 interprofessional Faculty. Outcomes: Student results are obtained from the SPICE-R survey and post-simulation reflections. Faculty results are obtained from debrief. Preliminary results show students and faculty find the prebrief helpful. Data collection continues and will be complete 12/2021. Discussion/Conclusion: This project incorporated the Prebrief Standard and can serve as a model for faculty seeking to implement prebriefing to enhance learner outcomes in simulation.
