  • Amy earned a B.S. at the University of Pittsburgh and M.S. from Rutgers University; both degrees in Ecology & Evolution. She’s a certified NC Environmental Educator® and Senior Lecturer in EVS.

    Research Overview

  • Ms. Long maintains a small research program, working with undergraduate and graduate students to study and restore native plant populations to degraded lands and dynamic shoreline environments. Her students use population survey techniques and planting practices to test and assess native-plant-focused restoration projects in beach dune ecosystems, brackish marsh estuarine ecosystems, and coastal forests and grasslands, developing rapid assessment tools and proven restoration strategies for government regulators, resource managers and restoration practitioners throughout North Carolina.

    • Teaching Overview

  • Ms. Long teaches numerous courses at UNCW, ranging from introductory, non-major courses like Global Environmental Issues (EVS 205), to mid- and upper level major’s courses including Analysis of Science Communication (EVS 321), Literature of the Environment (EVS 421), Sustainability and the Environment – Iceland’s renewable energy and ecology (EVS 431), Environmental Conservation (EVS 445), Restoration Ecology (EVS 469), and Senior Capstone Research Seminar (EVS 495). She has served as the EVSL 105 course coordinator for eight years and is stepping down after Spring 2023.
